General Information

Time:
GMT +8; same time zone as Singapore.

Population:
Hong Kong's population of 6.8 million consists predominantly of Chinese (98%). Buddhism is the main religion practised in Hong Kong, along with Taoism, Christianity and ancestral worship.

Weather and Climate:
Hong Kong's climate is warm and humid, with a wet January and February (13-17 degrees Celsius), warm and sunny from October to December (23-27 degrees). Look out for the notorius typhoons (hurricanes) from June to September. Today's Weather

Language:
The official languages are English and Chinese. However, Cantonese is widely spoken and understood by most businesses, and visitors who cannot speak this dialect are disadvantaged. In Macau, the official languages are Portugese and Chinese, but some locals also speak English.

Religion:
Freedom of religion is practised in Hong Kong where the majority of locals are Buddhists and Taoists, alongside Christian, Sikh, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Baha'i communities.

Currency:
The unit of currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) which is divided into 100 cents. Currency notes are issued in denominations of HKD 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Coins are issued in 10, 20, 50 cents and HKD 1, 2, 5 and 10.

Taxes:
Hotels add 10% service charge and 3% government tax to your bill; restaurants and bars add 10% service charge but no government tax. Tipping is generally expected.

Banking hours:
Banks operate from 9:00am to 4:30pm on weekdays, 9am to 12:30pm on Saturdays, closed on Sundays.

Shopping hours:
Most shops open daily from 10:00am to 7:00pm in Central, later in busier districts.

Credit/Charge Cards:
Major cards are accepted by hotels and larger retail establishments in Hong Kong.

Electricity:
The electrical current in Hong Kong is 220 volts, 50 cycles. Adaptors may be required.

Tap Water:
Urban tap water is considered safe to drink.

Getting Around:
Hong Kong is served by the efficient Mass Transit Railway (MTR) which connects Hong Kong, Kowloon and Lantau Island. Public buses and trams ply along major routes with scheduled stops, and minibuses stop upon request. Taxis are readily available kerbside.

Tourists spending some time in Hong Kong can consider purchasing an Octopus Card which provides hassle-free and cheaper travel on all buses, MTR, KCR, LRT, Airport Express and Star Ferries.


Travel Information

Travel from Singapore:
Direct flights from Singapore, three hours fifty-five minutes. Also accessible overland from the Chinese mainland.

Airport:
Chek Lap Kok International Airport (HKG) is located 20km west of the city centre. Airport limousines, taxis and public buses are available from the arrival hall. A highspeed railway links the airport to Kowloon in 20 minutes, Hong Kong in 25 minutes.

Passports and Visas:
Visitors from most countries can enter Hong Kong without a visa for periods varying from seven days to six months, depending on their nationalities. Anyone wishing to stay longer than the visa-free period must apply for a visa before travelling to Hong Kong. For more information, please contact your local travel agent or embassy. On arrival in Hong Kong, visitors will have to satisfy immigration officers that they possess an onward or return ticket.

Customs & Currency Regulations:
There is no restriction on the amount of currency you can bring in. The usual prohibitions against drugs, explosive and firearms apply. Customs & Excise Department

Duty Concessions:
Duty-free concessions are granted to international visitors: One litre of alcohol, 200 sticks of cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grammes of tobacco.
