Macau's population approximately 450,000 consists predominantly of ethnic Chinese (95%), Portuguese and Europeans.

Currency:
The unit of currency is the Pataca (MOP) which is divided into 100 avos. Currency notes are issued in denominations of MOP 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Coins are issued in 10, 20, 50 avos and MOP 1, 2, 5 and 10. HongKong Dollars (HKD) are also widely accepted on par value (1 MOP = 1HKD).

Banks are open from 9am to 4:30pm on weekdays, 9am to 12:30pm on Saturdays, closed on Sundays.

Most shops open daily from 10:00am to 7:00pm.

Getting Around:
Public buses ply routes with scheduled stops, and taxis are readily available kerbside. Most hotels provide free transfers to the jetty or Border Gate (to Zhuhai).


Travel Information

Travel:
Macau is easily accessible by air, or from Hong Kong via helicopter and highspeed ferry. Overland access from China is possible through Zhuhai.

Airport:
Macau International Airport (MFM) is located 8km from the city centre. Taxis and city buses are available in front of the terminal building.

Passports and Visas:
All visitors must hold a passport or a valid travel document valid no less than 30 days from arrival in Macau. Visas are not required by most nationalities for visits of up to thirty days. For more information, please contact your local travel agent or embassy. Immigration Services

Customs & Currency Regulations:
There is no restriction on the amount of currency you can bring in. The usual prohibitions against drugs, explosive and firearms apply.

Duty Concessions:
Duty-free concessions are granted to international visitors: One litre of alcohol, 200 sticks of cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grammes of tobacco.
